5 Factors That Determine How Much Your Replacement Windows Will Cost.

BY JASON QUILLMAN, CO-OWNER

If there’s ONE thing homeowners want to know about replacement windows in Ballwin, it’s price. And I absolutely get why.

Even if you’re not looking for the cheapest replacement windows (which you shouldn’t be!), you still want the best value for your dollars. No one wants to drop thousands of dollars on anything that’s less than 100% worth the money—no matter what they’re buying.

So I’d like to take a few minutes to review specific features of replacement windows that determine costs in our area. I won’t get into “external” factors that affect window pricing (contractor markup, for example) because those are typically determined by the company actually selling you the window—not the actual window itself. For this article, we’re strictly talking the measurable components of window pricing.

Let’s get started…

Ballwin Homeowner Calculating Replacement Window Prices 5 Factors That Determine Replacement Window Costs In Ballwin

1. Number Of Glass Panes

It’s simple math: The more glass panes in your window, the more energy efficient your window. Here’s the general rule of thumb when it comes to cost versus value in glass panes…

  • Single pane: lowest energy efficiency; cheapest price (don’t buy these!)
  • Double pane: average to good energy efficiency; average price
  • Triple pane: amazing energy efficiency; highest price

This is a general rule because there are always exceptions—XteriorPRO being one of them. Our partnership with Window Depot USA allows us to sell triple pane replacement windows in Ballwin for substantially better prices. (I said I wasn’t going to discuss “external” factors that affect pricing. Oops!)

2. Gas Fills

Gas fills determine price in a similar way to glass panes—the better the quality, the bigger the price. Here’s the general rule of thumb…

  • No gas fill (air between the panes): poor efficiency; lowest price
  • Argon gas: average to good efficiency; average price
  • Krypton gas: amazing efficiency; highest price

All but the very worst multi-pane windows have at least an argon gas fill. Argon is the standard for today’s windows, while Krypton is the premium option. Since it’s a higher quality gas, Krypton will slightly increase the cost of replacement windows in the Ballwin area. But the enhanced efficiency and savings are more than worth it. You can find out more on our Why Triple Pane page.

3. Window Frame Material

Most of today’s window frames are made of one of four materials. Here they are in order of least expensive to most expensive (on average):

  • Vinyl (least expensive)
  • Aluminum
  • Fiberglass
  • Wood (most expensive)

Unlike glass panes and gas fills (#1 and #2 above), a cheaper price does NOT equal cheaper quality when it comes to the frame material. For example, most homeowners prefer vinyl over aluminum because of vinyl’s superior energy efficiency; aluminum is pricier simply because it costs more for manufacturers to make. Ditto with fiberglass and wood windows. It’s really all about preference when deciding on a replacement window frame.

Remember: For this article, we’re strictly discussing window features. Can you find companies that charge wood-level prices for vinyl replacement windows in Ballwin? Absolutely. And those are the companies you need to duck, dodge, and avoid like your checkbook’s life depends on it. (Because it does.)

4. Other Replacement Window Features

The following features can determine how much you’ll invest in new windows in the Ballwin area…

  • Weather stripping
  • Trim
  • Decorative options
  • Size
  • Type (casement, double hung, etc.)

It goes without saying, but upgrades can greatly affect the price of replacement windows. I won’t spend too much time on this because there are so many variables. But think of buying replacement windows like buying a new car—the more features you add (and the higher the quality those features are), the bigger the price tag.

5. The Installation Process

The quality of installation can dramatically impact replacement window prices in Ballwin. A cheap quote from Company A can cost substantially more at Company B—for the exact same window! All because of the companies’ installation methods.

When I say installation, I’m talking about everything that includes: The techniques used, the caliber of installer, the quality of the ancillary materials like screws and caulk… the whole nine yards. Unlike window-frame materials (#3 above), window installation strictly adheres to the principles of “you get what you pay for.” And if you pay a cheap price, expect cheap results. That’s why it’s best to go with a window company that spares ZERO installation detail.
