The Myth Of The $189 Window In St. Louis County

Quality Windows For $189 Are Like Bigfoot,
The Loch Ness Monster & Unicorns…
They Don’t Exist!

BY JASON QUILLMAN, CO-OWNER

If you’ve spent even 10 seconds researching replacement windows in St. Louis County, you’ve no doubt seen companies advertise $189 windows.

On the surface, this sounds like an amazing deal. After all, who wouldn’t want windows for less than 200 bucks a piece?

But here’s the problem: In the home-improvement industry, if a price sounds too good to be true, it is. And $189 windows are one of the most notorious examples.

The truth is that $189 windows are a classic bait-and-switch. It’s not until you’re in the thick of a sales presentation that the ugly truth gets revealed: That sub-$200 price tag is for a window that’s so bad it shouldn’t legally be called a window. We’re talking a 1 out of 10 in energy efficiency, durability, performance, and every other conceivable category.

Why are these windows so bad? There are just too many costs associated with the manufacturing and selling processes…

  • Raw materials
  • Assembly
  • Transportation
  • Installation
  • Warranty & service
  • Business sustainability

These things don’t come cheap. If a company sold high-quality windows at $189, they’d fold faster than Superman on laundry day.

How Companies Get Away With “Selling” $189 Windows

Like I mentioned a second ago, that $189 price tag is a foot-in-the-door tactic.

Window companies dangle a dirt-cheap price in your face to get you to set an appointment. Once the appointment arrives, the salesperson will try to upsell you “upgrades.” The reality is that these “upgrades” are features that even the most average window should already have.

By the time you include all these “enhancements,” you’re looking at a window that costs up to seven times more than advertised!

And let’s be honest—would you really trust a window company that pulls this kind of bait-and-switch? I mean, if they’re willing to lie to you like this right off the bat, what else could they be lying about or hiding from you?

Here are a few common examples…

  • Using cheap ancillary materials (low-quality caulk, screws, insulation, etc.)
  • Hiring inexperienced day laborers to install your windows
  • Burying exclusions in their warranty within the fine print (Like this!)
  • Even exaggerating how energy efficient their windows are!

That last one sounds especially wild, but it’s all too real. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has actually had to bring charges against window companies for making deceptive energy-efficiency and cost-savings claims.

Yikes.

Bad WindowHow To Avoid A $189-Window Disaster

Any advertisement for $189 windows should immediately set off your B.S. meter. I’ve been in this industry for over 20 years, and I’m telling you—there is NO WAY good windows can exist at that price.

That’s why it’s best to go with a window company in the St. Louis metro area that doesn’t play phony pricing games or advertise bogus bait-and-switches. Instead, look for a company that provides fair, firm, and realistic prices. Because when it comes to windows, you don’t want the cheapest price—you want the best VALUE.

We don’t advertise $189 windows at XteriorPRO/Window Depot USA of St. Louis. And we won’t promise we’ll be the cheapest quote. We simply provide you with an honest price for our top-notch triple pane windows.

Sure, sometimes we run specials  and have a permanent 5% discount for our Valued Citizens. We also offer an efficiency discount if you buy during the appointment (we calculate what you save us on gas, labor, and opportunity costs, and then deduct that amount from your quote).

The difference is that we provide TRUE savings. We don’t markup our prices and then “discount” them down to the original amount. We always provide the price it takes to do the job RIGHT, and then offer you extra savings on top of that. Being the local Window Depot USA also puts us in a unique position to sell our triple pane windows for 34% less on average.

If that sounds like the kind of no-nonsense St. Louis County window company you’re looking for, get in touch.

Thanks!
